Nokia offers free shipping and pedestrian traffic on Ovi
Nokia offers a new version of Ovi Maps for its smartphones including a pedestrian navigation and free roadside including voice guidance.
It caused quite a stir as we announced Nokia this morning. The world leader in mobile phones now offering the new version of Ovi Maps functions including car navigation and pedestrian as a voice guidance in 74 countries in 46 languages, and traffic information in over 10 countries as well as detailed maps covering over 180 countries. And all this for free!

This free navigation and pedestrian traffic will allow Nokia to provide location functionality, content and new services. Recall that, according to research firm Canalys market, the number of people worldwide using the GPS to their mobile phones reached about 27 million at the end of 2009. Canalys also estimated that by 2009, smartphones with integrated GPS reached 163 million units sold worldwide, Nokia logging more than half (51%) units with 83 million GPS phones in combination.

A hybrid technology for use offline
Nokia uses hybrid technology to preload maps – via internet – on your Nokia smartphone so you can use Ovi cards offline and thereby preserve the battery. Maps on Ovi is an advanced technology called hybrid vector map using less data and to continue browsing even if you lose your network connection. The maps downloaded or updated by using a network connection are approximately twice as large as imposing bitmaps used by other card providers for mobile.
Ovi Maps can be downloaded now for 10 Nokia handsets including the Nokia N97 mini, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition, Nokia E52, Nokia E55, Nokia E72, Nokia 5230, Nokia 6710 Navigator, Nokia 6730 classic and Nokia X6. All info is available at www.nokia.fr / ovicartes.

From March 2010, the new Nokia smartphones with GPS will include the new free version of Ovi Maps, which includes local map data, pedestrian navigation and high-end road and access to travel guides Lonely Planet and Michelin .
