Can giant smartphone LG GW990 compete with Nexus One and iPhone? yes More than a superphone LG GW990

The highly competitive smartphone market is bringing new surprises everyday. First Google launched Nexus One, which it called a ‘superphone,’ and now South Korean electronics major LG has taken the meaning of a ‘superphone’ a step further by unveiling GW990, which boasts of a giant display and an ultra-powerful processor.
But can it take on Nexus One and iPhone?
The smartphone market is full of surprises at the moment first Google launched the Nexus One which it called a superphone and now LG the south Korean electronics major has taken the meaning of superphone to another level.
They have unveiled the GW990 which boasts a powerful processor and a giant display. The question is though is it capable of taking on Nexus One and the iPhone.
This is a revolutionary device with a massive display of 4.8, which is bigger than both the iPhone and the Nexus One. When it was showcased at CES in Las Vegas a LG representative comfortably demonstrated that it can run at least three apps side by side without any hiccups.
The LG GW990 is powered by Intel’s Moorestown processor, which is an energy efficient version of Intel’s Atom processor that powers mini laptop computers and net books. The clock speed of the processor is not yet determined, however it is expected to be at least 1Ghz in order to match or better Qualcomm’s snapdragon that is used ion the Nexus One.
GW990, the new smartphone from LG is a revolutionary device with a display of 4.8-inch. Its display is bigger than that of the Nexus One and the iPhone. In fact, it has the biggest display among all the existing smartphones. The smartphone was showcased during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. When the smartphone was introduced, a LG representative demonstrated that it can comfortably run at least three apps side by side in the foreground without any hiccup.
LG has also stretched the smartphone definition with the inclusion of super specs in their GW990 smartphone. LG GW990 is powered by Intel’s Moorestown processor, which is an energy-efficient version of Intel’s Atom processor that powers netbooks and mini laptops. The clock speed of the processor is not yet determined, but it’s likely to be at least 1Ghz, in order to match or be better than Qualcomm’s Snapdragon that’s used in the Nexus One. Intel is also booming with confidence as the Moorestown platform is not only based on the Atom CPU computing platform but also it is faster and more efficient than Atom processor itself.
“It’s (Moorestown) smaller, faster and better than anything we’ve done before”, said Intel’s president and CEO Paul Otellini, adding that the Moorestown-powered devices consumes 10 times less energy than previous Intel Atom-powered devices. This is good news for Intel as Moorestown can confidently compete against ARM-based processors in the smartphone market.
GW990 also runs on Intel’s Moblin 2.1 mobile OS, which is based on Linux platform. Not surprisingly, it can handle multitasking with ease.
In terms of built-in memory, the LG smartphone offers 16GB of built-in flash memory and 512 MB RAM – that’s better than the one offered by the Nexus One, which only gives 4 GB internal memory storage.
The LG smartphone also has a powerful 1850mAh battery compared to that of Nexus One’s 1400 mAH battery. And it has a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash that is equivalent to Nexus One and better than iPhone.
Nexus One offers 3G connectivity, but LG’s GW990 has 3.5G HSPA connectivity and there are supposed rumours that the smartphone may support LTE 4G technology in future that will provide super-fast broadband.
Other features include digital compass, onscreen keyboard, microSD card slot, S-Class UI, GPS with A-GPS support along with 7.2 MBPs HSDPA and 5.6 MBPs HSUPA.
GW990 hopes to bridge the gap between phones and PCs. Otellini said “Computing is no longer confined to your computer – it’s everywhere.”
Although, little specs of the smartphone were revealed, LG’s new smartphone already seem to have overtaken Nexus One and iPhone in major aspects. And with many more features expected to be revealed later during this year, LG has shown promise of delivering a mega smartphone that can give a tough competition to Google’s Nexus One and Apple’s iPhone.
