Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s native iPhone weather app is simple and fairly minimalistic, like the iPhone itself. That’s fine for some people, but if you want more eye candy from your weather app, you’ll need to look elsewhere. We did just that and we came across the new iPhone weather app Outside. With artsy graphics and detailed weather information, Outside is like a fortune-telling window into your local weather. It’ll even push weather notifications to your iPhone for free for 30 days.

Compared to the iPhone’s weather app, Outside is refreshingly informative. The app literally opens a window into your local weather. The background graphics change based on time of day and weather status. You swipe left or right to switch between weather forecasts for the entire week. Swiping down reveals detailed data like UV index, humidity, cloud cover, wind speed and direction, and sunrise and sunset times.

And, to keep you up-to-the-minute on your weather, push notifications alert you when the weather forecast changes. Outside can be setup to send you push notifications when it sees cold, rainy, high UV , or t-shirt weather in your future. The app comes with a 30-day push notification subscription, and offers additional 90-day subscriptions at $0.99 cents.

Outside costs $2.99, so it’s more for people that are serious about your weather. But, if detailed weather information and a pretty UI make you giddy, you’ll get what you pay for.

Hands-On Mobile is the latest company to join the “iPhone craze” with not one but 4 games for Apple (NSDQ: AAPL)’s mobile platform. Without further ado, the iPhone games are:

• bitFLIP – which is touted as a “new flip on the classic match-three genre,” combining solid graphics and sound. (price: $0.99 and there’s a free lite version, too)
• iBailout!! – Pac Man-kind of game which sees you controlling The Fed, eating money instead of dots, angry citizens instead of ghosts. That’s actually until the people turn into bloodthirsty Fed-hunting mobs and chase you down with torches, pitchforks, and baseball bats and you cowardly declare martial law. (price: $1.99)

• Karnival – the game sees you controlling a “freak” born with the arm of a goat. It’s your goal to travel across the land, gain the loyalty and trust of other “freaks” to organize a carnival with thrills, wonders, and tasty treats. (price: $3.99, free lite version is here)
• Seven Wonders: Quest for Koh-i-noor – you control an associate Professor of History and a descendent of the great Moghul Emperors called Harry as he goes to India to save his father and the world from the curse of the Koh-i-noor, an ancient diamond with mystical properties. (price: $2.99)

Here’s another reason why you should jailbreak your iPhone. What you need (or at least what I need) is a quick snapshot of key activities (primarily Calendar appointments) on the lock screen. There’s already an app for that called IntelliScreen, which I personally love! And today we present you with a similar application – LockInfo.

Like the mentioned IntelliScreen, LockInfo shows such information as calendar events, unread texts and missed calls on the iPhone’s lock screen. The information presented is grouped and if you don’t have any unread SMS nothing will show up.

Everything is pretty customizable, so for instance you can opt to view calendar events and missed calls, only. Moreover, you can theme-up the design to make it suit your “artistic needs,” if you desire so. In addition, there are plugins available for Twitter, push notifications and so on.

To sum things up – if you haven’t bought IntelliScreen, you should grab LockInfo. It costs $4.99 and it’s available from Cydia. You may have to add David Ashman’s repository (http://david.ashman.com/beta/) in order to see the app on the list. And again, a jailbroken device is required.

Here’s a great way to take advantage of the iPhone’s built-in accelerometer. Using the application called String Trio, you can simulate playing a violin on your shiny handset or an iPod Touch. The application detects the angle and length of your strokes, and accordingly adjusts the playback of the music. You can choose automatic accompaniment or “go solo” without any backing instruments.

There are over 20 classical and folk songs included with the application, and you can also grab additional 10-track collections for 99 cents, each. The price of the app itself is $1.99. AppStore link is here.

Apple is likely to miss a self-imposed deadline for delivering support for Microsoft’s latest operating system to Mac users running its Boot Camp dual booting software.

In October, the Cupertino-based Mac maker said it planned to deliver support for Windows 7 through an update to Boot Camp that would arrive be year’s end.

“Apple will support Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate) with Boot Camp in Mac OS X Snow Leopard before the end of the year,” the company wrote in a support document. “This support will require a software update to Boot Camp.”

Asked whether Apple still planned to make good on that promise, a company support representative fielding Boot Camp-related questions said his division has received no update on the matter and his belief was that the update was still undergoing tests.

The representative said it was very unlikely that the update would surface in the next 24 hours, adding that a release sometime early next year would be a safer bet.

A federal appeals court on Wednesday rejected a class-action lawsuit seeking to hold Apple Inc responsible for possible hearing loss caused by using its popular iPod music player.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco affirmed a 2008 district court ruling that the plaintiffs failed to show that use of the iPod poses an unreasonable risk of noise-induced hearing loss.

It also found that the plaintiffs lacked standing to allege a violation of California’s unfair competition law.

Jeff Friedman, a Berkeley, California lawyer representing the plaintiffs, did not immediately return a call for comment. David Bernick, who represented Apple, had no immediate comment. An Apple spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Cupertino, California-based Apple has sold more than 220 million iPods since their 2001 launch. It provides a warning with each iPod that urges users to avoid hearing damage by setting the volume at safe levels.

The plaintiffs, Joseph Birdsong and Bruce Waggoner, had argued that the iPod ear buds are designed to be placed deep in the ear canal, which increases the danger of hearing damage.

They also said that iPods pose a danger because of their lack of volume meters or noise-isolating properties, despite being capable of producing sound as loud as 115 decibels.

The appeals court said the plaintiffs showed ways they believe iPods could be made safer, not that they were dangerous.

“The plaintiffs do not allege the iPods failed to do anything they were designed to do nor do they allege that they, or any others, have suffered or are substantially certain to suffer inevitable hearing loss or other injury from iPod use,” Senior Judge David Thompson wrote.

“At most, the plaintiffs plead a potential risk of hearing loss not to themselves, but to other unidentified iPod users,” he wrote.

The plaintiffs had sought money damages, and to require Apple to improve safety and disclosures, provide better headphones, and test iPod users for hearing loss.

Apple shares rose $1.43 to $210.53 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq.

The case is Birdsong et al. v. Apple Inc. U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, No. 08-18841.

Google phone rumors first started in 2007 when Google was rumored to launch a competitor to iPhone.  Instead, it launched the Android OS, a new smartphone operating system.  It left much of software design to the vendors, focusing on refining the operating system and a core set of apps.  Since Android’s initial launch, about a dozen Android handsets have popped up, including the recent Droid phone from Motorola, carried on Verizon Wireless.

Earlier this month, rumors were revived that Google really was finally making a “GPhone”.  The phone’s name was quickly leaked — the sci-fi-esque designation Nexus One.  Google also confirmed that it had given employees a snazzy next generation phone for Christmas (it was these loose lipped employees that originally spilled the beans on Twitter).  According to reports, this time around Google personally customized the OS and designed all the basic software bundle for the phone, unlike past Android handsets where it split software responsibilities with its partners.  Reportedly, HTC is producing the hardware for the Nexus One handset.

Now more details have been reportedly leaked.  Reportedly the phone will be primarily carried in the U.S. by T-Mobile, but also be available in unlocked form for use with other G.S.M. carriers — in the U.S. that means AT&T can handle the phone as well.  According to T-Mobile News‘ “internal sources” at T-Mobile, the phone will launch on January 5 at 9 a.m. via online orders only.

According to a later report from Gizmodo, the phone will not be sold at-cost as many speculated.  Rather than bringing a phone revolution and offering unlocked-only and profit-free handsets, Google instead appears to be opting for a more capitalistic approach, offering the unlocked handset for a tidy sum of $530 and a discounted handsets for $180 with a two year T-Mobile contract.

To keep existing T-Mobile plans — such as the Family plans, Flexpay, SmartAccess and KidConnect plans — you must opt for the unlocked phone, reportedly.  Otherwise, you can pick up a specially designed voice+text+web plan for $79.99/month.  That’s just slightly more than the basic iPhone plan with 200 texts ($75/month).

Other notable restrictions reportedly will apply.  You can only purchase five phones per Google account (okay, this isn’t such a big deal, as making new accounts is a breeze).  And more importantly, if you cancel the contract on the T-Mobile-carried phone, you’ll reportedly have to pay the difference between the unsubsidized phone and the discounted phone — $350.  However, there’s a significant catch — you can send your phone back to Google and not pay any phone-specific ETF (though T-Mobile might still hand you an ETF).

Google has invited reporters to “an Android press gathering” on January 5, lending credibility to the hoards of leaked info.  A Google spokeswoman said that the press conference would be held at 10 a.m. and followed by “demonstrations” afterwards.
