It seems we aren’t the only ones that feel sorry the Nokia N86 8MP lacks a xenon flash like its predecessor – the Nokia N82. So the Finnish company decided it had to do something to restore its latest flagship reputation and released a statement, boldly claiming that the handset doesn’t need a xenon unit to make good low-light shots.
Of course we do agree with most of the points listed – the Nokia N86 8MP wider-angle lens and wider aperture make it easier to avoid camera shake in lowlight environments but the developers have also missed on some major points.
For one the wider-angle lens and the wider aperture aren’t enough of a compensation for the light output difference between a xenon flash and a LED unit (be it 3rd generation or not). While flash photography has its flaws too (the harsher shadows and the overexposed parts of the reflective subjects in the frame spring to mind) our humble opinion is that cameraphones are far from ready to tackle low-light photography without a proper flash. Even dedicated point-and-shoot cameras produce highly noisy results in flash-less photography. And as much as we want to believe that the Nokia N86 8MP has somehow managed to bend the laws of physics, our eyes tell us otherwise.
In fact the N86 8MP did come pretty close to the Samsung Pixon12 image quality in the dark with the flash units on both devices turned off and that speaks well in favor of the progress Nokia are making. However once the xenon power kicks in, it becomes a really uneven battle as you can see from the samples below. Nokia have even gone as far as doing a low-light shootout between the N86 8MP and their oh-so-popular xenon-equipped N82. So yeah – when you are able to keep the device steady (as in “there’s no way you are getting a nice shot hand-held”), the N86 can match the now retired 5 megapixel cameraphone. However if you don’t have a support at your disposal, xenon light is the only thing that can give you shutter speeds that are quick enough for hand-held shooting.

Now don’t get us wrong – the N86 8MP is still a really good cameraphone package. However its key feature is the wide-angle lens, rather than the exceptional low-light performance or top-of-the-class image quality. So thanks Nokia for going the extra mile and explaining us that the tiny low-power LED can fully substitute the technology that has been used in dedicated cameras for years now, but we’d really prefer simply going for xenon next time.
The US FCC website leaked a new version of the popular Nokia 5800. It’s called 5800i, but contrary to what the name suggests, it’s not a pure upgrade over the regular 5800 XpressMusic. There are no detailed specs yet, but as evident from the photos and the concluded tests, there are at least two differences.
Just by looking at the shots of the Nokia 5800i XpressMusic, there don’t seem to be any visual clues to what is different. A closer look at the 3 megapixel camera specs written on the back reveal a longer focus distance – 4.6mm as opposed to 3.7mm in the original model.
Now that may mean one of two things – either the camera has a more narrower field of view (it’s more zoomed-in in layman’s terms) or there’s a larger sensor hiding behind the Carl Zeiss optics there. The first suggestion doesn’t make any sense for a cameraphone, so the right answer is probably B). However for some reason, Wi-Fi has been left out of the new 5800i equation. Quite strangely, as we’re not really sure whether users would prefer better image quality over Wi-Fi.
The Nokia 5800i XpressMusic, of course, is probably far from its official announcement so we’d just have to wait a little bit longer to get all the juicy details. In the end things might take a turn for the better.

With the entry-level 5530 XpressMusic just around the corner, Nokia needs an upper-midrange model to fill the gap between the N97 and the 5800 XpressMusic so it can have a complete range of touchscreen devices. We aren’t quite sure if a QWERTY side-slider is the best choice, but the N97 was pretty well received so what do we know. A more affordable version of the Symbian-fans dream device might be just what’s needed to have them make the switch to the Symbian touchscreen world.
Today LG took the next step towards revealing the identity of their BL40 fashion phone. Official photos of the device appeared on the manufacturer’s web site showing the LG Chocolate successor in its full shine.
LG are yet hesitant to reveal the exact specifications of the new LG Chocolate, but the official announcement that’s rumored for August should clear things out. LG BL40 “New Chocolate”
As (rather trustworthy) rumor has it the LG BL40 Chocolate will run on the latest S-Class interface, sporting an extraordinary 4″ touchscreen display with cinema aspect ratio of 21:9 and a resolution of 800×345 pixels. A 5 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, Wi-Fi, GPS and 3G are the other features expected to be on board.
The new LG Chocolate also has some sort of Dual Screen UI to help utilize the extra wide display better by showing two different types of content simultaneously.
We are also pretty eager to see when the LG BL42 little brother of the BL40 will get official confirmation. The slim slider has retained more of the spirit of the original LG Chocolate designwise, but its specs are an almost complete mistery so far.
The new LG Chocolate will be available beginning Q3 in 54 countries world-wide.

ورفضت أبل السماح لشركة جوجل بتوزيع تطبيق “جوجل فويس” علي أجهزة “آي تونيز”، التي يمكنها تحويل الخدمة من أجهزة الكمبيوتر إلي الهواتف، مغلقة بذلك الباب أمام مستخدمي “آي فون” من خدمة طال انتظارها.
وأشارت صحيفة “لوس أنجلوس تايمز” الأمريكية إلي أن أبل امتنعت عن التعليق علي القرار، الذي لاقي معارضة كبيرة من المدونين، كما اتهمت مجلة “بي سي ورلد” أبل بأنها تحكمها نزعات غريبة.
ونقلت الصحيفة عن بعض المحللين قولهم إن أبل ببساطة كانت تحمي ظهر شركة AT&T شريكتها، من فقدان إيرادات من مشتركين قد يستخدموا “جوجل فويس” لتمرير خدمات الاتصالات والرسائل النصية.
وقال ريتشارد دوهرتي، باحث في مجال التكنولوجيا للصحيفة إن استخدام “جوجل فويس” قد يأخذ دقائق من شركة AT&T ، مضيفا أن “الخوف هو من أن تتمكن جوجل من إغراق المستخدمين في غرفة دردشة واحدة مع جميع أصدقائهم، وفي تلك الحالة لن يكونوا بحاجة إلي AT&T .
يذكر أن أبل قد منحت حقا حصريا لشركة AT&T لتزويد “آي فون” بالخدمات الهاتفية في الولايات المتحدة.

أعلنت الشركة الوطنية للغازات الصناعية (غاز)، التابعة لـ«سابك» السعودية، أنها وقعت خطاب نوايا مع شركة «سامسونغ» الكورية لإنشاء مصنع للغازات.وستتولى «سامسونغ» وفق خطاب النوايا، تصميم وتوريد وإنشاء مصنع المرحلة الثامنة لإنتاج الغازات الصناعية في مجمع شركة «غاز» في مدينة الجبيل الصناعية، وبطاقة سنوية إجمالية قدرها مليوناً و200 طن متري من منتج الأوكسجين، ومليون طن متري من منتج النتروجين، و33 ألف طن متري من مادة الأرجون.
ونقلت تقارير إعلامية، أمس، عن عبد العزيز سليمان الحميد، رئيس مجلس إدارة «غاز»، قوله إن «مصنع المرحلة الثامنة سيغطي الطلبات الحالية والمستقبلية لغازات الأوكسجين والنيتروجين والأرجون لشركات (سابك) التابعة والشركات الأخرى في المنطقة»، مشيراً إلى أن «تنفيذ العقد سيكون على أساس تسليم المفتاح، وأنه يتوقع دخول المشروع مرحلة الإنتاج خلال الربع الأول من العام 2012».
من جهة ثانية قالت مصادر في قطاع الكهرباء إن «الشركة السعودية للكهرباء» مدت موعد تقديم عروض بناء محطة كهرباء بقدرة 2400 ميغاوات أكثر من ثلاثة أشهر، وذلك نزولاً عند طلب المنافسين المحتملين.
وقال مقاولون إن «الشركة السعودية للكهرباء» تتطلع إلى توفير التكاليف بعد انخفاض أسعار السلع الأولية وخدمات الطاقة ونفقات العمالة على مدى العام الماضي، وقدر مسؤول في الشركة أن تكلفة المحطة تصل إلى أربعة مليارات دولار بعدما كانت التقديرات الأولية نحو خمسة مليارات دولار.
ويسهم التوسع المزمع لمحطة كهرباء رابغ بنسبة 12 بالمئة من 20 ألف ميغاوات تنوي الشركة المملوكة للدولة إضافتها حتى العام 2018، بتكلفة إجمالية تبلغ 80 مليار دولار، وتنتج الشركة السعودية للكهرباء حالياً نحو 37 ألف ميغاوات.
وسيكون لدى المقاولين مهلة حتى 31 من أكتوبر المقبل للتقدم بعروضهم لتوسعات محطة كهرباء رابغ، وكانت الشركة قد حددت موعداً مبدئياً انتهى في 13 من يوليو الجاري.
وقال علي بن صالح البراك، الرئيس التنفيذي للشركة، إن المقاولين طلبوا تمديد الموعد لإعداد عروضهم، وقال مصدر في شركة مقاولات «هذه المحطة ليست صغيرة، لذلك فإن عطاءات التصميم والأعمال الهندسية ستستغرق، وقتاً أطول بكثير مما كانت تتوقعه الشركة السعودية للكهرباء».
وقال البراك إن محطة كهرباء رابغ 6 ستكون بقدرة 2400 ميغاوات، وقال مقاولون إن قدرة المحطة قد تصل إلى 2800 ميغاوات.
وقال مقاولان إنه من المتوقع إنجاز أعمال توسعة في المحطة في الربع الثالث من العام 2014، وإن العملية تنطوي على إضافة أربع وحدات قدرة كل منها 600 ميغاوات.
ومن بين الشركات المتقدمة بعروض «بمكو» العربية و«هيونداي» للصناعات الثقيلة و«ألستوم» و«سيمنس» و«دوسان» للصناعات الثقيلة والبناء، وشركة «المقاولات الوطنية» السعودية، و«ميتسوبيشي» للصناعات الثقيلة و«ماروبيني كورب» اليابانيتان.
Samsung will be launching the developer’s backend of their Application Store tomorrow. By using the new Application Seller website, developers will be able to publish apps or content to Samsung Application store (Symbian, Windows Mobile and Java) as well as track sales records, revenue and even rankings. Billing and payment are also handled online through the new Application Seller website.
The Samsung Seller Site (not up yet) is the next step in the Samsung efforts in streamlining the apps and content delivery to end users. The Samsung Mobile Innovator has been up for more than half an year supporting developer’s efforts. Samsung even launched a beta version of their Application Store in English and German earlier this year. The fully-fledged Samsung App store however will start spawning in regional versions across Europe in Q3 this year.
Registering on the new website is available after a basic entry fee of only one US dollar. The Seller Site members will be able to purchase a sales contract online and check the certification status in real-time.
These days almost every major manufacturer has an App Store running. There are so many, that having one will no longer give any manufacturer an edge but it will sure bring them up to the standard set by the competition. The Apple AppStore has been faring quite well and the massive amounts of new apps and games surely make the Apple iPhone quite an attractive platform despite its flaws.
In Samsung’s case they’ve waited quite some time before they started their own apps distribution initiative probably to stay away of what has traditionally been a network carriers business. And as you probably know, network carriers are the largest customers of mobile phone manufacturers. But times are changing and so are the rules of the game obviously.
So here it goes – the carrier customized version of the HTC Hero will be available in less than 24 hours to T-Mobile customers in the United Kingdom. In a message on Twitter the carrier team announced that the handset will appear in the online store from tomorrow with real stores following over the next few days.
The HTC Hero is best-equipped Android handset to date (until the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X3 shows up anyway) and will go by the name of T-Mobile G2 Touch.
Just as their direct competitor Orange (the other major carrier to offer the HTC Hero), T-Mobile UK will allow their users to get the G2 Touch for free. To qualify for that Andorid-lovers will have to sign an 18-month 40 pound-a-month contract.
Unfortunately for our American friends T-Mobile USA has no plans to follow suit and will not offer the G2 Touch anytime soon.
